It starts with a school nurse on Staten Island. Mike is 14 years old, four foot nine, and 51 pounds overweight, and she tells his mother that without a change he could be looking at a stroke by 40.
His father, a laborer, is at work. His mother grabs his hand and says: "I know what to do." She sits him in front of Jack LaLanne and tells him, "I'm chubby too. We're going to lose weight together."
The weight comes off and keeps coming off. The titles follow: Teenage Mr. America, Mr. California, Collegiate Mr. USA. LaLanne goes from the man on the television to a mentor in his life. And it is his mother, again, who encourages him to bring what saved him to other people. In 1985, Operation Fitness is born.
Hollywood came later. The roster earned its place on this page. But the mission was set in that kitchen on Staten Island.
Operation Fitness today is that turnaround built into a system: bloodwork, nutrition, training, recovery, mindset, carried by a team of medical experts, so changing your life does not depend on luck or genetics.
When clients call him a genetic freak, he corrects them. "Listen, I came from your tribe. I was a chubby kid once. The only difference is I worked at it."
